Just as MTV adapted to changes in the entertainment industry, ChatGPT’s launch and the accompanying reports of its potential impact on education did not faze Barber. Instead, she saw an opportunity to incorporate ChatGPT into her teaching. Barber sought out ways to use the tool in the classroom and found several promising possibilities.
“Using ChatGPT in the Writing Classroom: Tips and Tricks”
As technology advances, the use of AI in the classroom has become increasingly common. ChatGPT is one such tool that can be used to support students in their writing process. From providing feedback to generating ideas, ChatGPT can be a valuable asset in the writing classroom.
Here are some ways to utilize ChatGPT in your writing lessons:
- Feedback on essays: Have students paste their essays into ChatGPT and ask for feedback. The AI will provide general feedback on the structure of the essay. This can serve as a starting point for peer feedback or teacher feedback.
- Generate ideas: ChatGPT can be a great tool for brainstorming. Ask students to use it to generate ideas on a given topic. This can be a helpful starting point for students to build their writing skills.
- Debate/discussion generation: Encourage students to develop a claim or argument and ask ChatGPT to refute it. This will help students to strengthen their original argument and focus on content.
- Create quizzes for reading checks: ChatGPT can offer individualized self-checks for understanding. Students can generate their own quizzes and read at their own pace. This can build confidence in readers or serve as a signal for students to seek help if they’re having trouble.
- Create writing samples for revision: Have students take a ChatGPT response and experiment with elements of syntax, tone, and diction to make the response more authentic to their writing voice. Or, students can focus on content by adding claims, evidence, or analysis.
- Practice scoring: Have students score writing samples generated by ChatGPT. This could be done as a class-wide norming process or in small groups. The emphasis should be less on the score and more on the discussion around writing.
- Generate writing prompts: ChatGPT can be used to create writing prompts on topics of interest to students, saving teachers time and increasing student engagement.
As a teacher, it’s important to consider the assignments you’re asking your students to complete. If they can be easily completed by a computer response, are they worth doing in the first place? While you’re evaluating this, ChatGPT can be a useful tool in the writing process.
